PC BS at 12:30 am

I was checking out a story on a fairly popular gay zine recently about two actors, one was TR knight (who was famously outed by Isaiah Washington) of Greys Anatomy, and the other was Zachary Quinto who you might recognize from Hero’s or as Spock on the last Star Trek movie. The story wasn’t anything spectacular…just a “hey these famous gays do normal stuff like us!” kind of piece with accompanying photos.

Because Quinto is one of the myriad of celebs who live in a glass closet….you know….they enjoy their gaiety but never live their lives honestly (Jody Foster, Anderson Cooper etc) there were a few comments by righteous queers that really, REALLY bugged me:

Does he really need to be outed Queerty? Yeah I know, glass closet. But this isn't a Larry Craig thing where he's discriminated against gays and has lost the right to his own privacy. He doesn't even beard, so why not just leave him alone until he finally comes out for real?
I think this sort of thing might encourage other gay actors to be less open.

Totally agreed with AA.
NOT COOL AT ALL

I agree with AA as well.
NOT COOL

The sheer stupidity of AA’s ‘logic’ astounded me., and the lemmings who chimed in with their ’not cool’s infuriated me.

Here’s what they don’t get:

It’s BECAUSE of actors, politicians, clergy, bus drivers, school teachers etc who refuse to be open and honest that bigotry becomes socially acceptable. If a famous person, let alone a regular joe or jane isn’t proud enough or brave enough to say “Yeah I’m gay”….they perpetuate the notion that being gay is something to be ashamed of and we all suffer.

What’s the saying? All that is necessary for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.

We live in an age where we want everything handed to us on a silver platter, and this PC BS ideology about ‘ooooh…don’t out this sweet actor…he might lose a role’ is dangerous to you, me and the little kid in the Nebraska cornfield. Like it or not little queerlings (of all ages), SOMEBODY has to blaze the trail, put their money where their mouth is and be proud. Otherwise the Sally Kearns, the Mormon churches and illiterate rednecks of this world win and we go back to the shadows...or worse.

Hmmm, a tricky topic. Being out of the closet isn't really an option is many situations.

Lt. Col. Victor Fehrenbach was forced to out himself in order to defend himself against a false accusation of rape. You might have special interest in him because he is/was stationed in Idaho. His career is now destroyed. Was his forced outing a good thing?

I know a few men who are gay but do not yet know it. They are married with children, and in total denial of their sexuality. If these men were outed to themselves and to the public, their fragile lives and emotions would be shattered. Would this outing be a good thing?

My point is, those of us who want people to be out of the closet have an agenda. By having more people out of the closet, we become more visible and accepted. But there are people with legitimate reasons to remain in the closet and, in my humble opinion, it is not up to us to sit in judgment as to whether their reasons are sufficient. We can encourage them to come out, try to convince them with sound reasoning, but in the end as long as they are not hurting others by their actions (like Sen. Craig) the final decision is up to them.

I guess I'm one of the "righteous queers" that bugs and infuriates you. Don't hate me Geoff.

I can see your point. You have no idea how many people I know on the DL an I can see how their behavior hurts everyone. It hurts the people they lie to it hurts how those in the black community view and relate to gays it hurts the one keeping the secret. Nobody wins.

OH Larry, Larry, Larry. How could I possibly hate you? I know there are two sides to every story. I think the 12:30 am point I was trying to make was, queers in general need to stop being all panicky about being gay and stop coddling those who could do so much good by being out...but don't in the name of fear or greed. I stand by the asserition their closetedness hurts us all. I actually met Lt Col Ferenbach (over the phone) when I was doing a story on my previous podcast. He's a great guy and I admit you have a valid point.

Brooke, I couldn't agree more. How about the spread of STDs including HIV among guys on the DL ...whatever race they are?

I just think it's a personal decision. The world isn't perfect.
