"There is a right to privacy, but not a right to hypocrisy. It is very important that the people who make the law be subject to the law. People who are not subject to the laws will make harsh laws because they don't have to live with them". --Barney Frank

Who woulda thunk that the CEO of a fast food restaurant could stir up so much trouble when it comes to Gay Marriage? After declaring his company "Guilty as charged" regarding it's stance against gay marriage, he ignited a firestorm of controversy. Dan Cathy placed himself on the wrong side of history when it comes to civil rights and forced the glbt community and our allies to examine where our money goes when we fork it over to someone like him. * His companies charitable arm, WinShape, gave nearly $2 million to groups opposing gay marriage in 2010. The Cathy's have contributed more than $81,000 to state and federal politicians since 1990, according to the Center for Responsive Politics and National Institute on Money in State Politics. All but $3,250 of those contributions went to Republicans, all of whom held anti-gay marriage views. *src US NEWS
Few hate mongers are as blatant, vile or open about their hatred for gays, than Brian Fischer. But it isn't just hate that this former church pastor spews from his microphone, he also shouts blatant lies and misinformation about the LGBT community to anyone who will hear him. Lies like Hitler and the Nazi's were gay, HIV doesn't cause AIDS, and the separtation between church and state is mythical are just the tip of the iceberg of frozen crazy he shouts from the rooftops. Brian Fischer is is the Director of Issues Analysis for the American Family Association, a designated Hate Group.
Ken Mehlman occupies a unique footnote in gay history. Mehlman by all accounts, liked being a DC power player. He even headed George Bush's 2004 re-election campaign. In fact, that presidential campaign, the Bush reelection effort and the GOP used anti-gay marriage initiatives in key states, such as Ohio, to enhance their electoral prospects. The party continued to whip up anti-gay sentiment after Melhman assumed the helm of the Republican National Committee. His coming out was hardly a surprise, he was outed by each party and by blogger Michael Rogers. Melhman said he wanted to become a gay marriage activist, but the reaction toward him by the gay community at large was at best one of suspicion and at worst hatred after suffering through policies he helped draft and implement during the Bush regime.
A singer, Miss America Contestant and Pitchwoman, Anita Bryant is most famous for her 1977 campaign in Dade County Florida to repeal a local ordinance which prohibited discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. Dubbed the 'Save Our Children' campaign, it was based on ultra conservative biblical beliefs, and used scare tactics claiming homosexuals were actively "recruiting" children. She took her cause to several states in the 1970s and inadvertantly became a galvanizing force for the Gay Rights Movement. She was famously hit in the face with a pie at a news conference in Des Moines Iowa in 1977, and as a result of her hateful activism, lost her job pitching Florida Orange Juice.
