When I heard that story, I kept thinking of the popular saying Christians ask themselves when confronted with a dilemma......"What would Jesus do?"
I have a hard time believing Jesus would approve that twisted line of thinking in the case of DCs Archbishop.
It seems to me, the major roadblock we face as queers in todays world is religion. Whether you're an islamic extremist, or a devout Baptist, almost all efforts to repeal your rights, and or exterminate you as a gay person are rooted in religion.
Religion is the perfect excuse for sanctified hatred. How can you argue or combat the so called "logic" espoused by an invisible, and non present deity?
You can't.
And as long as religion strong-arms the government, whether you're in the Middle East, North America, or anywhere in between.....the battle is going to be fierce. Make no mistake....it IS a battle. It's a struggle, and it's a fight for life.
Pay attention to your history!
From Hitler in Austria...to Iraq...to George W's election platform....when it becomes socially acceptable to marginalize gay people, all hell breaks loose. We watch our current rights disappear...we face incredible odds stacked against the rights we deserve...and when the tide of hatred and oppression is allowed to flow unchecked we face eradication.
Most queers today have no idea what it was like to grow up in the shadows of society. I grew up in the 80's and that was bad enough....but even that era didn't compare to the times many of the men I feature on Time Travel Thursdays had to live through.
We have to find a way to change people's minds...in spite of religion.
I don't have the answer as to how we do that...maybe you don't either, but maybe.....we can come up with it together as we stand against those who hate us like the Archbishop of Washington D.C.
What would Jesus Do?
